What is The Salvation Army?

The Salvation Army is a world-wide Christian church that is committed to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ in both word and action. As a result, the Army shows practical concern and care for the needs of people regardless of race, creed, colour, sex or age.

What does The Salvation Army do?

The Salvation Army helps people in need through a wide range of social and family programmes. These include foodbanks, budgeting advice, counselling, family tracing, advocacy, addictions treatment, accommodation, youth services, hospital visitation and women’s refugees.

The Salvation Army also operates churches, called Corps, in cities and towns around New Zealand, and in Fiji and Tonga.

What’s a Salvation Army Corps?

A corps is a Salvation Army church. The Corps covers a specified area, such as in Wellington City Corps. Each Corps runs church services and a variety of other activities such as social programmes and initiatives that benefit people in the community.

Who is the head of The Salvation Army in New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga Territory?

The Territorial Commander is Commissioner Garth McKenzie. He is supported by the Chief Secretary, Colonel Robin Forsyth, and an executive board.

How is The Salvation Army organized? Is it a national or regional organisation?

The Salvation Army is a local, regional, national and international organisation. Corps (churches) and offices of various social programmes such as Community and Family Services operate at the local level.

The Salvation Army New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga Territory is made up of five divisions—comprising Fiji, Northern, Midland, Central and Southern—and one region, Tonga.
