Editorial

One Life—Make it Count! That’s the challenge Salvation Army officership represents for those God calls to this task. One Life—Make it Count! That’s the example set for us by our Salvation Army founders.

So what does make a life count? The number one requirement is a solid relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This fills people with the passion and purpose to achieve God’s ends in the world—as Salvation Army founders William and Catherine Booth and others did, and as many Salvationists have done in the years since The Salvation Army began.

A relationship with God also helps us face the smaller challenges—and opportunities—presented within our families, schooling, workplace and community. At the time, we don’t always appreciate the difference God is making in these everyday areas of life, but looking back, we can see how he has guided our steps, placed us and others in certain situations, and even worked miracles along the way.

In last week’s Stimulus article—the first of a new series—Major Barbara Sampson wrote about ‘setting our hearts on pilgrimage’ (Psalm 84:5). The idea of ‘pilgrimage’ conveys more than a passive, undirected meandering through life; it’s akin to a determined, focused journey to a special destination. One definition says it is ‘a journey to a sacred place’. The Bible is our essential tool on that journey. If your Bible reading has become a little stale, Barbara’s ideas on ‘Finding New Paths into Scripture’ could be just the tonic you need!
