School of Bible and Mission

The School of Bible and Mission (SBM) was established by The Salvation Army in 2001. It is located at The Salvation Army's Booth College of Mission (BCM) campus at Upper Hutt.

SBM is designed to appeal to people who want to:

  • develop their knowledge of God and the Bible
  • develop their ministry skills for use in their local church/corps/community
  • prepare for full-time leadership within The Salvation Army or their local church
  • begin biblical and ministry studies at tertiary level and see where it leads them
  • use a time of study as a way of testing their call to serve as a Salvation Army officer or in other full-time service
  • prepare for full-time ministry employment within The Salvation Army or their local church or other agency

Study can be either on a full-time or part-time basis.

Training History

The Salvation Army has been involved in ministry training in New Zealand since 1890. A national training school for officers was established in Wellington in 1913. This moved to Upper Hutt in 1982.

The School of Bible and Mission shares the BCM campus with The Salvation Army's School for Officer Training (SFOT) and Centre for Leadership Development (CLD)

Accreditation

BCM is registered as a private training establishment with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) persuant to the Education Amendment Act 1990.

Relationship to Bible College of New Zealand

In 1999, The Salvation Army and Bible College of New Zealand (BCNZ) signed a partnership agreement whereby students taking courses at BCM would receive credits towards BCNZ awards.  This agreement was renewed in 2003.
