Half-way Houses

Transition House project 'The Inn'

The Transition House project 'The Inn' is supervised emergency accommodation in Wellington for up to eight young people. They can stay for approximately 4-6 weeks.

The programme targets troubled youth, aged from 15-25 years, who have need of emergency accommodation, employment and other kinds of assistance. They are likely to be unemployed, estranged from family or any other positive support people, have negative peer associations and have no accommodation—or else only detrimental options.

Rather than simply providing short-term accommodation, the programme works towards long-term stability. Once the young person is stabilised initially, they are then moved to more permanent accommodation.

Staff engage in dialogue with a resident

During their time at 'The Inn' each client works alongside a daytime case worker in areas of need relevant to them gaining employment and long term accommodation. This is achieved by teaching basic life skills such as cooking, budgeting, CV preparation, job searching, flat hunting and any other areas that would assist the individual.

In addition to these life skills, 'The Inn' uses adventure based learning techniques, including the use of high rope facilities, initiative courses, tramping and trips to Blue Mountain Adventure Centre.

'The Inn' also caters—through the Courts—for youth that are on parole or bail, assisting with their bail conditions and community service requirements.

Adventure based learning and relaxation also plays a part in a residents time at 'The Inn'

Often those who come through 'The Inn' have had trouble with drugs and alcohol. The serious cases are referred to The Salvation Army’s Bridge programme or other suitable agencies. The house can—and does—cater for youth graduating from the Bridge programme as a transitional step back into the community.

Youth also come to 'The Inn' through referrals from The Salvation Army’s Hope Centre, Courts, Police, Evolve Drop in Centre, churches and many other agencies.
