Women's Refuge
The Salvation Army operates a refuge in Christchurch for women with nowhere else to go.
Known as Dee Cee House, the refuge caters for women such as substance abusers and prostitutes who are not eligible for other kinds of shelter. It can accommodate three women for up to 12 weeks, with places available for two additional women on an emergency basis.
The refuge provides practical support for women with no place to go, while at the same time giving them an opportunity to improve their lives. The house is closed during the day to get clients out into the community to look for employment sort out their lives.
Clients pay a weekly fee to live in the house. They sign a contract which includes a prohibition on smoking and the use of drugs and alcohol on the premises.
Dee Cee House is run by The Salvation Army's Street Outreach Service and is supported with funding from a variety of sponsors, including law firm Duncan Cotterill and the Farina Thompson Charitable Trust.
