National Youth Band

Since its formation in 1989, The Salvation Army National Youth Band (NYB) has grown and developed into a fine example of a modern day brass band. In keeping with the nature of Salvation Army musical groups, the NYB is concerned with more than just musical excellence. The primary function of the band is that it might present the Christian Gospel message through its wide musical repertoire and the individual witness of each member.

Members of the NYB are mostly between 16 & 30 years of age and are drawn from all walks of life. They are not 'professional players', but are involved in various forms of employment, attend school or study at university. Members must be uniformed members (Senior Soldiers) of The Salvation Army and involved in the music ministry of the local Salvation Army church (Corps). They come from throughout New Zealand and membership currently includes one member from Tonga. Many of the members are single, some are married, and some have young families. The band meets for an extended rehearsal weekend once a year and accepts invitations for a maximum of 4 other weekend visits per year.

The musical director for the NYB is Stephen Stein who also serves as Director of Music for The Salvation Army in the Territory. Part of his job is to ensure that the band continues to have a resource to draw its players from and this is where the formation of an even younger Development Youth Band 6 years ago has proved very successful.

Apart from its commitment to visit Salvation Army churches (Corps) throughout New Zealand, the NYB completed a very successful 2-week tour of the USA Western Territory midway through 2002. The band were very encouraged to be so well received on this tour and this has inspired members to work even harder to make the bands musical ministry relevant in these challenging days.

NYB Mission Statement:

Our message is not about ourselves; we're proclaiming Jesus Christ.  It started when God said "Light up the darkness!" and our lives filled with light as we saw and understood God in the face of Christ.
