Food Banks

The Salvation Army provides food to people in need throughout the year. Food banks operate at Community Ministries centres and some corps (churches). Some people are in the desperate situation of not having enough money to feed themselves or their families.

Food banks are very much a temporary and emergency measure to tide people over a rough patch in their lives.

Sometimes they may just have a temporary money problem, but other times there are underlying issues such as alcohol or gambling addictions.

People who visit a Salvation Army food bank typically undergo an assessment of their situation. If they are on a benefit, Salvation Army staff will check to make sure they are receiving their full benefit entitlement, which can make the difference between managing and not managing.

The assessment is also an opportunity to find out if the client has deeper rooted problems, and what other services could help improve their situation and remove them from dependency. For example, the Army’s budgeting service can help people to use what limited resources they have to maximum efficiency and therefore remove their need for food parcels.

Food banks are also in operation around the Christmas period, when pressures on families can be particularly intense.

Families in need may receive a Christmas hamper of food, as well as toys for the children.

The Salvation Army also offer low-cost or free meals during the year for people who are lonely, are living with mental illness, or for families struggling financially. For example, The Salvation Army runs a Student Meals programme in Dunedin for students who are living away from home or in need of fellowship.

A programme in Timaru provides meals and companionship for older people during the bleak winter months.

Other meals take the form of meals on wheels and are designed to meet the needs of older people or house-bound individuals.

The Salvation Army relies on the generosity of local businesses, corporate sponsorship and the support of members of the community to keep food banks stocked, meals provided and toys in stock. Sometimes donations of food are made, other times money donated to The Salvation Army is used to purchase supplies.
