The General announces changes in Tanzania and Kenya

9 October 2007 -- IHQ, London

Tanzania

The General has decided that, with effect from 1 February 2008, the Tanzania Command will be elevated to territorial status and be known as the Tanzania Territory.

This is the result of clear focus and determination of the now 105 active officers and almost 5,000 soldiers who, since separation from the former East Africa Territory in November 1998, have worked tirelessly towards developing and equipping people and leaders who – under the direction of the Holy Spirit – have achieved what was thought impossible. Their theme of ‘Vision for Mission’ has proved to be a reality.

Kenya

By decision of the General, and with effect from 1 March 2008, two territories will be created in Kenya. They will be known as the Kenya East Territory, with territorial headquarters in Nairobi, and the Kenya West Territory, with THQ in Kakamega.

Within The Salvation Army, Kenya has the greatest number of senior and junior soldiers, even after Tanzania and Uganda – formerly joined with Kenya as the East Africa Territory – received separate status. Its size, including 799 active officers and almost 180,000 senior soldiers, in 29 divisions and districts, has necessitated this restructuring to allow for further growth. Kenyan Salvationists are praying that people and places as yet unreached will now be evangelised effectively.
