Summary

Overall, The Salvation Army appreciates the intentions of this Bill to address and improve accessibility issues for disabled people in New Zealand. It is positive that there is an appetite and drive for change from our Parliamentarians in this area. This follows from the momentum of establishing the Ministry of Disabled People in July 2022. However, The Salvation Army is disappointed that this actual Bill is too limited in scope with its primary focus on establishing this Accessibility Committee. We had expected and hoped for more with this Bill, especially after it had been promised for so long by this government. In the end, this Bill can be a good building block or starting point to meaningful change in this space. But more is urgently needed than what is contained in this current Bill.
