Music Academy

Music Academy

For more than 120 years the Salvation Army in Wellington has been making and teaching music. The Brass Academy was started in 2005 by members of the Wellington Citadel Band in an effort to give Wellington residents the opportunity to learn instrumental music.

Cool brass...

The Brass Academy has been in operation since 2005. We can teach all brass instruments. We normally start kids off on cornet but they can branch out later, if they like, to other brass instruments. We are able to supply most brass instruments for students.

Learn to play guitar?

We offer guitar as an option in 2010. Nathan Holt, an experienced teacher and guitar player has joined us recently. To learn the guitar you must have your own guitar and lesson book. We have set up a deal with Music Works, so contact us for information on where to buy both. If you would like to learn to play guitar then you will be welcome to join Nathan.

How about the keyboard?

Is there a budding Elton John, Dianna Krall, or even Sergey Rachmaninov? They all started somewhere. The keyboard is a gateway to all music, many of us wished we learned the piano as kids. Here is a chance for you. It is never too late to learn.

'I have some questions about the Music Academy'

  • When does it happen?
The academy is on Thursday afternoons during the normal school term from 4pm until 6pm. If you turn up before 4pm you may get a drink and a snack.
  • Where is it held?
We use the facilities at The Salvation Army Church at 92 Vivian Street, Wellington City.
  • Why do something like this?
The Wellington City Salvation Army has a long and proud history of music making and teaching. We also have a passion for people and reaching out into the community in which we live.
  • Who is it for?
Primarily it is for kids between the ages of 8 and 16 years of age. But we can accommodate kids of all ages providing there is room.
  • What about the tutors?
All of our tutors have been vetted by the Police and the Salvation Army so are of the highest moral standing and have experience in teaching kids of all ages.
  • Will my child learn music theory?
Yes! We are proud to have a member of the Wellington Vector Orchestra come and teach theory to all students.
  • How much will it cost?
The cost of the programme to 2010 will be $35 per term. This will cover the cost of tuition and photocopying. Sometimes we have to pay for tutors to come and teach, this may help cover some of those costs as well. This does not however cover the costs of any music theory and tutor books that may be required when your child starts.
