Independent Living Units

Hands rested on cane

The Salvation Army has 234 independent living units (ILUs) throughout New Zealand.

These units provide an essential service for the low income elderly. If you or a family member is an older person in need, please read this page to find out more about applying for one of these units.

The units are supplied with:

  • floor coverings -- carpet and vinyl
  • communal aerial -- but not TV set
  • electric stove
  • one fixed infra-red heater (in some units only)

You will need to supply:

  • curtaining/blinds
  • telephone
  • refrigerator
  • washing machine
  • your own furniture and household appliances
  • rubbish bin

Most units have one bedroom, large enough for two single or one double bed, a built-in wardrobe, lounge/dining room, kitchen with pantry cupboard and space for a refrigerator, utility room with shower, tub, toilet and wash-hand basin and space for a washing machine. In addition there is a hot water cupboard and a small storeroom outside. Each unit has its own clothes line.

The conditions of tenancy in a ILU

  • ILUs are rented to independent tenants only. However, you may use services such as: cleaning, showering, shopping, meals on wheels, etc. if needed. You might use your ILU as an intermediary step before going into full-time care.
  • You're expected to keep your unit (including your outside area and gardens) clean and tidy.
  • You may not alter any part of the interior or exterior of the unit. Building storage and garden sheds or carports is also not allowed.
  • Pets are limited to caged birds, fish and only one cat.
  • No parking is permitted on the lawns.
