Hayley, Tony and their two children

At the time of the devastating Christchurch earthquake in February 2011, Hayley, Tony and their two young children Emma and Josh, were already struggling to make ends meet. Increased costs for power, rent and transport were making inroads into their relatively low income.

Following the quakes, widespread liquefaction in their suburb caused the family’s rented home to sink.

Waterlogged silt bubbled up through the floor and wrecked their belongings - clothes, furniture, bedding and the kids’ toys and books. Without insurance, there was no money to replace even essential items.

By winter that year, their house was cold, damp and draughty.

‘We were so worried about the kids,’ says Hayley. ‘We just couldn’t cope.’

The Sallies were there for the family with emergency food, clothing and furniture. Our school earthquake support workers provided practical assistance such as heating and bedding as well as social work services at the children’s school to help build resilience in the wider community.

Hayley and Tony will take part in a Salvation Army Positive Lifestyle Programme to guide them through dealing with issues such as stress, anger and grief.

A trained and skilled mentor will give regular guidance and moral support to all of the family, as well as friendship to help them through their difficult times. We are committed to continuing our support of Hayley and her family as they move toward leading healthy and self-sufficient lives.

‘Seeing our kids suffer mentally and physically has been so tough,’ Hayley says. ‘The Sallies have been a real Godsend and I don’t know what we’d have done without them.’

Your generous donation will help change the lives of families in need across the country by providing longer-term supportive services as well as emergency assistance.
