The newly elected National Government ran its election campaign on a clever little maxim: ‘We can have a brighter future, but only if you choose it’. Even though it is not clear who the ‘we’ represents—who will in fact ‘have’ the favourable future—and it is a little misleading (not to mention, intimidating) to suggest that ‘a’ choice (how ‘I’ and ‘you’ chose on election day) will determine our future, I still see something in this slogan that deserves considering.
Every day (and not only at election time) I think we can collectively make choices—political decisions, constructive refusals—that do hold the potential to impact positively on our shared future. But how?
