Salvation Army launches Canterbury Earthquake Appeal

The Salvation Army has launched an appeal to help those in need after the Canterbury quake and is receiving strong support from the public and from the corporate sector.

Launching the appeal, Public Relations Secretary Major Robbie Ross said, ‘People will be in shock, some have lost possessions and housing, many will be needing food and comfort. We are asking New Zealanders to contribute to The Salvation Army’s Canterbury Earthquake Appeal to bring emergency relief to the people of Christchurch and affected rural areas.’

On Sunday 5 September, Westpac announced it had set aside $1 million for the Westpac Canterbury Care Fund and that The Salvation Army would be a primary partner to help those requiring food, shelter and care.

'The objective of the Westpac Canterbury Care Fund is to help families get back on their feet as quick as possible. The Salvation Army is one of the most respected and recognised community care organisations in New Zealand and we are thrilled to welcome them as a primary partner with the Westpac Canterbury Care Fund,” said Westpac Chief Executive Officer George Frazis.

'When the state of emergency is lifted, central funding for The Salvation Army stops but the needs of the people in Christchurch whose lives have been turned upside down will continue for some time,' Mr Frazis added.

In addition to The Salvation Army, the Westpac Canterbury Care Fund will also work with Christchurch people to decide how the $1 million will best serve the community. Mr Frazis said it is important local people have a role in the decision-making process.

Territorial Commander Commissioner Don Bell said, ‘The Salvation Army welcomes the contribution and partnership of Westpac, which we know is focused on getting the people of Canterbury back on their feet as soon as possible.

‘The funds donated by Westpac will give a solid base from which we can meet emerging needs, which we will understand more fully in coming days. The Salvation Army will work with the community to ensure this money makes a real difference to those affected by this weekend’s devastating earthquake. It is our privilege and our responsibility to work with the Canterbury community in such difficult circumstances.’

Westpac has also set aside a $1 billion loan fund specifically for the rebuilding of Christchurch.
