Marriage: You CAN Have Happily Ever After

Can there be any nation as proud of its DIY spirit as New Zealand? ‘She’ll be right!’ is our anthem, even if it’s sometimes expressed more as desperate prayer than unequivocal truth. But there are areas of life where ‘do-it-yourself’ doesn’t always ‘do-it-best’. Marriage is one such area.

The good news is that we don’t have to work out how to build a great marriage on our own. There are resources to help us ensure our marriage remains a wonderful place to live. Last year, after 21 years journeying together, my husband and I went along to The Marriage Course that’s promoted in this edition. It helped us break a few bad habits but also made us more appreciative of one another and more committed to our relationship.

There’s nothing DIY about War Cry; the publication is blessed with a skilled and hardworking team. This week brings me the sad task of farewelling my deputy editor of almost two years, Cara Wood. Cara’s a talented journalist who has had a tremendous impact on our readers. As editor of our youth pages, she has been a champion of Salvation Army youth. I thank Cara for her dedication and pray God blesses her future ministry.

In Cara’s place we welcome Hayden Shearman, whose writing appears for the first time this week. Some of you might know him from his tenure on the Christian youth magazine Soul Purpose. Hayden’s with us until mid-year, when he hopes to further his studies overseas. Until then, he has a lot of insight to offer and I know you’ll enjoy hearing from him each edition.

I’m also delighted to welcome Vanessa Carey on board. Vanessa is part of the amazing Youth Department team at Territorial Headquarters. She’s been hard at work on a revamped Salvation Army youth website (www.firezone.co.nz) that’s being let loose on cyber space any day now (check it out!). Vanessa and Hayden will collaborate on War Cry’s youth content. Enjoy!
