EDITORIAL

The intention of the Government in introducing its legislative package is to benefit people and the country but as we all know, often intention is not realised in the actual delivery of social policy.

The Government has announced its intention in the current year to make legislative changes to social policy that will impact heavily on the people The Salvation Army works alongside.

Legislation to be introduced includes alteration to welfare provision, changes to the way alcohol is sold and marketed, changes to the environment surrounding gambling, alter the supply and provision of social housing, and liberalising a person’s right to prematurely end their life in certain circumstances.

The Salvation Army works primarily with New Zealanders in the bottom 30 per cent of income and we feel a responsibility to engage with such matters as they will impact heavily on low income people and their communities.
