When you see it written down, that number can be hard to believe. At The Salvation Army, we see the reality behind this statistic every day.
We see New Zealand children hospitalised for preventable conditions like respiratory and skin infections, and rheumatic fever.
We see them underperforming at school because they’re sick or undernourished. Numbers are numbers, but the children behind them are real.
We’ve all heard stereotypical stories about parental neglect. But in our experience, most impoverished parents don’t ignore their responsibilities and instead work hard to deal with day-to-day problems that most of us can’t imagine.
It’s easy to lose hope – and when that happens, it’s hard to believe there could ever be better days ahead.
Every day, The Salvation Army works to bring hope to children and their families. But it’s a big job, and we can’t do it on our own.
That’s why we ask you to help by donating to our Red Shield Appeal. We’ll use your donation to provide emergency help with food and clothing, as well as supportive services such as budgeting advice and life skills programmes.
Our work helps families break the cycle of poverty and despair and see a way to a brighter future.
