Today in New Zealand, there are thousands of women, men and children who live in desperate situations—people struggling to provide enough food, clothing and a warm and healthy home for their family.
People like Jenny, a forty-two year-old single mother of three. After a tough upbringing, living in violent and abusive domestic situations became a way of life for Jenny. Her most recent partner put her in hospital more than 20 times.
Through the trauma Jenny lost her job, her self-respect, even her kids.
When she hit rock bottom, Jenny made a decision to change and regain control of her life. With the help of The Salvation Army, she received counselling for depression and addiction treatment. And once Jenny and her children were reunited, we provided furniture, bedding and food parcels to help set up their new home.
Encouraged by our practical advice and emotional reassurance throughout her ordeal, Jenny is now employed and independent of our support.
'With the Sallies help I set myself goals to heal, to get my children back and to teach them to make far better choices than I had made,' Jenny says. 'I feel I’ve started that and I intend to continue.'
Jenny’s reality is sadly familiar. Every day at The Salvation Army, we work to bring hope to Kiwis like Jenny and her children. But we simply cannot do this alone.
Please stand side by side with Kiwis in need by giving to our annual Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.
Your donation will provide much-needed supportive services such as life skills programmes and budgeting advice, as well as emergency help with food and clothing.
With your generous support, people like Jenny and her children can take positive steps toward a brighter future.
Please donate today and stand side by side with those who need it most.
