About the Department/Operation/Programme

The Family Store in Addington has helped to support the Addington Men’s Hostel over the last 30+ years, ensuring that the hostel continued to provide essential Emergency Housing in Canterbury. We have recently relocated 2 smaller shops, to one large, well located site, on the very busy Lincoln Rd. This has resulted in a very encouraging number of new customers and turnover over the last few months. The shop operates 6 days per week, opening between 9am and 5.15pm each day.        

About the role

The Team Leader role will provide vital support and assistance in operating and leading this store to meet the strategic and financial goals for this site. As a newer store, there continues to be opportunity to bring about further improvements to the way this site operates and functions in conjunction with the support and guidance of our new Area Store Manager. Together with the rest of the staff and many valuable volunteers, we are aiming to find ways to recycle and discover the treasures that are in the donations we receive each day.        

Key tasks

You will assist in the day-to-day leadership on this shop site alongside a second Team Leader already in place. You will assist others to ensure that we undertake the sales and sorting of the donated goods, giving customers a valued experience so encouraging them to be repeated customers and donators in the future.

You will help to encourage the staff and volunteers to be the best they can in their roles and different functions. We will work towards building upon the foundations already achieved, in having a successful new Family Store, that continues to help fund valuable community Social Services in the future.        

Person Specification

Describe in bullet points the ideal applicant:

  • Have prior experience in the retail of second-hand goods, including the pricing and value of these donations
  • Be able to relate to a diverse range of people, building long term relationships with customers and volunteers
  • Be well organised, have strong people management skills and business experience
  • Be aware that at times there will be lifting and moving of a lot of items throughout the day, as it is very much a “hands on” type of role.  
  • Have computer and electronic sales experience
  • Able to roster, coordinate and support staff and volunteers
