This is a 12-month fixed term position for 20 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

About the Palmerston North Corps and Community Ministries

The Salvation Army Community Ministries provide invaluable services to a wide range of people across Palmerston North. Services include foodbank, budgeting and community finance, welfare, disability services, counselling and social work as well as access to spiritual support through Palmerston North Corps (the Church).

About the role

This position is to provide quality budgeting services to clients who come into the Salvation Army Centre at Palmerston North.  This involves working closely with the clients to educate, guide and support them in financial matters, developing their skills and assisting them to meet agreed goals and outcomes.

Candidates will have highly developed communication skills, both written and verbal, and a strong customer service focus.  They will appreciate the needs of people on low income and have a strong desire to improve the social and economic wellbeing of these people.  Therefore, an ability to build rapport and empathise with clients from diverse backgrounds and complex needs is essential.

Ideal candidates will show an ability to identify with and work within the mission and values of The Salvation Army.

We require a reliable, team player with a good sense of humour.

Applicant MUST have:

  • Current Accreditation as a Budget Adviser by NZFBS;
  • Ongoing commitment to professional development.

Applicant should have the following key competencies:

  • Training and experience in the budgeting process;
  • A professional, friendly approach;
  • A passion for people and a positive attitude;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • The ability to work in a team;
  • Sensitivity and the ability to relate to people regardless of age, culture and circumstances;
  • The ability to work with difficult clients (i.e. must have emotional stability, patience, maturity of judgement, sense of humour);
  • Discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Computer competency in Word, Excel, and email;
  • Reliability, flexibility and accountability;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Sympathy to the aims, mission, principles and Christian ethos of The Salvation Army.
