About the Palmerston North Corps and Community Ministries

The Salvation Army Community Ministries provide invaluable services to a wide range of people across Palmerston North.  The services include foodbank, budgeting and community finance, welfare, disability services, counselling and social work as well as access to spiritual support through Palmerston North Corps (the Church).

Purpose of Community Ministries

  • To provide a culturally appropriate and holistic ministry within the community which addresses the social, spiritual, emotional and physical needs of people;
  • To share the love of God as expressed through Christ in a sensitive and appropriate manner.

About the role

  • To show acceptance, inclusion and genuine interest in people, validating their story and aspirations;
  • To listen, relate and affirm people in such a way that they are encouraged to examine their issues and create solutions that lead to sustained independence
  • To work within the Model of Care framework and align practice with guiding policies and procedures (assessment, intervention, outcome, evaluation);
  • To ensure the set outcomes are being achieved and reporting aligns with practice;
  • To support with food insecurity through developing plans to enable empowerment and diversity;
  • To provide an environment that is warm and welcoming to participants requiring food resources;
  • To encourage participants’ participation in additional internal and external supports, counselling financial mentorship and budgeting;
  • To engage deeply with in the whanau network and develop strong supports to move forward;
  • To build resilience to feelings of shame, embarrassment and confusion through the building of self-worth, value and strength.

Key tasks

  • Understand and utilise the powhiri process for engagement and relationship building;
  • Promote the client as the expert in their own life;
  • Use strengths-based practice motivational interviewing skills in all interactions;
  • Support and develop client driven goals and determine procedures for intervention and support;
  • Load Information into SAMIS in assessment, case plan, session records and client feedback;
  • Supporting the change to food independence;
  • Being the voice for those requiring change, building independence.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Hold (or completing final year of) a NZ-recognised Social Work qualification and be Registered (or committed to undergoing the process of Registration).

  • Understand and respond to the effect’s trauma has on a person’s functioning, engagement and outlook on life;
  • Empower people to find their own path to wellness through the promotion of self-determination and collaboration;
  • Build rapport, respond quickly and appropriately to situations and treat people with respect and dignity;
  • A strong understanding of, and a heart for social justice issues;
  • Computer competent;
  • Ability to work within a team.
