Alexandra Corps

Welcome to The Salvation Army Alexandra, in the heart of Central Otago. We are a truly multigenerational church that seeks to be:

  • A place of Turangawaewae (place or belonging and enjoyment) for all.
  • A family of shared Whakapapa (heritage and identity) in Jesus.
  • Manaakitanga (blessing) to all people.
  • Tangata Tiriti (people of the Treaty), valuing the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi to bring us together.

We value our tamariki (young people) and create a space for them as part of our regular worship services, including our Tūhono Whanau (Family Connect) Celebration services every two months.

We also run the Alexandra Community Garden. See the Local Events tab below to read more. Visit https://www.facebook.com/AlexandraSalvationArmy/photos for photos of the garden on our Facebook Page.

Please contact us for information about upcoming events and groups.

Local events

Welcome to Eden Garden, the Alexandra Community Garden run by The Salvation Army.

Some history – the garden has operated for the past 15 years. The garden moved to its new larger site at 105 Dunstan Road, Alexandra in July 2020.

The garden provides fresh vegetables for the Food Bank during the summer growing season. Sixteen Public allotments are available to the public at no cost. These enable those holding an allotment to grow their own vegetables and are irrigated along with the Food Bank plots.

The garden started firewood production about ten years ago. Poplar, willow and pine firewood is generally available.

If you or someone you know has a need for fresh vegetables or firewood please contact us. We will arrange delivery or a place to collect from.

Should you wish to have use of an allotment please contact us. There are rules in term of compliance which if not complied with will result in the allotment being given to some other person.

The garden is operated by the Salvation Army on behalf of the combined churches of Alexandra. The manager and a number of volunteers carry out the physical work. The garden is operated Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 12:00noon. Some of the current volunteers work one or two days a week. Some work most days. Those who are keen to get involved will be able to access various courses from Work Safe First Aid to varying Chain Saw courses and more.

The garden can only operate with the support of our local supporters. These include:

  • Central Otago District Council – who provide the land at a small rental cost.
  • The Central Lakes Trust – who provides the bulk of the money. The garden costs
  • The Alexandra Rotary Club – the club has supplied valuable equipment and on the 2nd Thursday in each month provides manpower to help split firewood.
  • The Alexandra Lions Club – the club has provided much valuable equipment
  • Benchmark Construction – their funding enables us to repair any damaged equipment.
  • Other valuable supporters include the Alexandra Lodge, Honda Davidson Ltd, and Feron Motor Court.
