The Good Shop is a mobile shopping vehicle that is available to visit your home. It has two services - a grocery shopping service for people who have trouble getting to a supermarket and a home based shopping service to purchase household and personal items at store prices on interest free terms.
Anyone can use The Good Shop – you do not need to be a current client of The Salvation Army to have The Good Shop visit you. However, please note that The Good Shop does only operate in selected locations and shopping is not available online or over the phone.
You will need the appropriate ID. If wanting to buy items on credit you will also need recent bank statements and information on any income and expenses. If wanting to use the grocery service you will need an EFTPOS card to make payment. The Good Shop does not accept cash. No, The Good Shop does not perform credit checks. However, as a responsible lender, The Good Shop will only lend to you if you are managing all your current expenses and debt.
The Good Shop sells a range of furniture, electronics, white ware, laptops, appliances, baby equipment, home heating, linen and outdoor equipment. Items sold on The Good Shop have been carefully selected based on price, quality and their ability to improve life-quality and social inclusion. Only items that are deemed as appropriate and reasonable for people to get into affordable debt for are included on The Good Shop.
Please note that The Good Shop does not stock gaming consoles or branded clothing.
No – The Good Shop does not recommend the use of credit to purchase consumable items such as food. If you are struggling to purchase groceries without going into debt The Good Shop staff can refer you to other services for support. The Good Shop grocery service is designed to support people who have trouble travelling to a supermarket.
All loans offered by The Good Shop are interest-free and there is no administration or booking fee. There is a delivery fee for all items. This varies depending on what it purchased - The Good Shop staff will let you know what the delivery fee is before placing an order.
Dues to its range of products and the size of items it carries The Good Shop does not carry any stock on its vehicles. Instead, clients browse items on line via The Good Shop’s tablets. Any items purchased are delivered to the client by courier / delivery truck within 1 – 5 days of an order being placed. All groceries are delivered the next day, unless requested otherwise.
No, The Salvation Army does not profit financially from The Good Shop. All rebates received through the sale of items are used to help offset the costs of running the programme. Similarly, all corporate partners involved in The Good Shop are participating out of social responsibility and are not doing so on the basis of profit.
For many years The Salvation Army has been working with clients experiencing the effects of high interest, high-fee loans. We have seen, first hand, the long term detrimental effects this can have for New Zealand whanau. For the past four years The Salvation Army has developed experience in providing interest-free loans in its Community Finance programme. It now feels well-equipped to provide a similar alternative in the mobile shopping industry.

The Good Shop staff work face-to-face with all loan applicants. They take the applicant through an application process that includes understanding the applicants’ current financial situation and ensuring that loan repayments are affordable and sustainable.
It would be ideal for people to have savings in hand to buy essential household goods and items, but this is not always possible for people on low-incomes. The Good Shop is a better alternative for people who might otherwise be trapped by high-interest, high-fee loan providers. When people have opportunities to access safe, well-supported and affordable loans, borrowing can be a useful step that helps them move forward financially. As legislation comes into force that more closely regulates the mobile shopping industry it is also important that any removal of peoples current means of purchasing items is replaced with a better alternative.
Loans will only be provided to those people with the ability to repay, and we will support people with financial literacy skills to ensure they can repay their loan without undue stress on the household budget. If people come to us for loans and they already have a high debt level, then working with them to reducing that debt will be a first step before accessing further loans.
Repayments are calculated to be affordable across the term of the loan for people on limited incomes. High interest rates, fees and unexpected penalty payments that lead to unsustainable debt are not part of The Good Shop.
