Te Kai Mākona
The Salvation Army’s response to building a food secure Aotearoa
For 140 years, The Salvation Army has been responding to food hardship in Aotearoa, adapting our response to meet the changing needs of people and communities.
Nearly one in six New Zealanders are living with moderate to severe food insecurity. Where food hardship was once triggered by a moment of crisis, today’s reality is more complex and enduring.
To address this challenge, The Salvation Army has adopted a new framework – Te Kai Mākona – which aims to make a difference in three key ways; strengthening food provision, fostering food empowerment and addressing the underlying causes of food insecurity.
