This website has recently undergone substantial rebuilding. While we’ve worked to minimise disruptions, you may encounter some issues. We appreciate your patience during this transition.

Need food?

Our food support is provided through 60 of our Community Ministries centres and corps (churches) around the country. Freephone 0800 53 00 00 and we will help you find your nearest Community Ministries centre, or you can use our interactive map to find it yourself.

What will happen when I go to a Salvation Army centre?

We do all we can to support people with food in times of hardship to meet their unique needs with the resources we have available. Our foodbanks enable people to choose their own food items, providing greater levels of choice and agency and creating opportunities for deeper connection.

If you are in a desperate situation and do not have enough money to provide for yourself or your family, we can help. Our aim is to give you a helping hand so that you can gain a greater level of control over your life.

When you visit one of our centres, you will undergo an assessment with one of our staff. If you are on a benefit, we will check to make sure you are receiving it in full, which can sometimes make a huge difference. The assessment is also an opportunity to find out if any of our other services could help improve your situation.

A lack of money is often the reason that people come to us for help. Alongside assistance with food, clothing, and furniture, we link people into longer-term support such as parenting classes, short-term housing and financial mentoring.

We also offer a range of additional food supports to build on the strengths and capacity of people to meet their own food needs. These include options to choose kai, share kai, grow kai, cook kai, buy kai and connect through kai. Find out more about Te Kai Mākona here.
