Hard times bring tough choices

After leaving her provincial town to escape the brutality of gang life, Keri found herself alone with her children and spending most of her income on rent and power. The day she found the courage to drop into her local Salvation Army centre was the day Keri started building a new future for her children and herself.
A High Country station brought high cuisine to the Mackenzie Basin in March, raising $17,000 for quake-affected Christchurch families.
To help families create a brighter future free from the horror of domestic violence, The Salvation Army will launch an innovative play therapy programme called “Safe from the Start” in June. Breaking ground in the way we work with pre-school children exposed to family violence, this terrific new programme helps parent and child together.
Salvation Army welfare services are continuing to deal with the rising human costs of the recession and the Christchurch earthquakes. Those who made the choice to help our Red Shield Appeal this year will make an incredible difference in the lives of everyday New Zealanders.
