A Splash of Paint, A Can of Food: Resene’s Hunger for Colour Helps Refill Salvation Army Foodbank Shelves

February marks the return of Hunger for Colour, the annual partnership between Resene and The Salvation Army that invites New Zealanders to swap two cans of food for a free 60ml or 80ml Resene testpot.

Now in its 12th year, the campaign has added more than 300,000 cans to Salvation Army foodbank shelves, while customers have received over $1.5 million worth of free paint in return for their generosity.

Major Christina Tyson, head of The Salvation Army’s Community Ministries, says the timing of the campaign couldn’t be better.

“Our foodbanks are often sparse at the start of the year, and this partnership is an easy and fun way to fill those shelves,” she says. “It’s a win for everyone, people get to add colour to their homes or creative projects, and their donations help us support those doing it tough.”

Last year, The Salvation Army provided over 90,000 food parcels to people experiencing hardship.

“The Salvation Army brings hope and brightness into people’s lives when we provide food and other essential wraparound services to support their wellbeing and resilience. We’re deeply grateful to Resene and their customers for their continued empathy and generosity,” says Christina.

A Resene spokesperson says the campaign has become a highlight for customers across the country, especially rock painters, who look to restock and try new colours, and home renovators.

“This longstanding campaign generates fantastic feedback, and we’re delighted to keep doing our part to help our fellow Kiwis. Our customers love that they are donating something that supports their local community when they get creative with Resene test pots.”

Hunger for Colour runs from 7–28 February at Resene ColourShops nationwide.
