Christchurch Bridge launches innovative new peer support service for healing from drugs and alcohol

The Salvation Army’s Christchurch Bridge programme has launched the Te Awhina Peer Support Service, offering a powerful way for people to recover from drug and alcohol misuse.
The Salvation Army Bridge provides a range of effective support services that help reduce the harmful effects of alcohol and other drugs in people’s lives. Tāngata whaiora (people seeking wellness) and their whānau are provided with a safe place where personal choice is supported by a range of professional kaimahi (staff), who deliver culturally appropriate support encouraging wellbeing.
Located at The Salvation Army Bridge in Ōtautahi Christchurch, the new peer support service uses a model called Rātā Kouru Ora. The evidence-based model, underpinned by a te aō Māori worldview, draws on Salvation Army values of courage, compassion, innovation and connection, alongside a commitment to Te Tiriti.
Te Awhina Peer Support Service is available to anyone seeking support to overcome harmful substance misuse and can stay for as long as needed. Other Bridge services, such as Brief Intervention programmes, will continue to be offered in the villa alongside Te Awhina. This villa is staffed by clinicians, who can provide support as needed.
“Peers are a tangible expression of hope for those seeking recovery from destructive substance use,” says Major Sue Hay, Salvation Army Christchurch and West Coast Bridge Services director.
The new peer support service comes as alcohol and drug harm continues to plague Aotearoa New Zealand. The Salvation Army’s State of the Nation 2025 report, released on February 12, reveals one in six people are now drinking in a way that is dangerous to themselves and others. Methamphetamine use now causes $34 million in social harm weekly, and $1 billion in social harm annually.
