Hunger for Colour and helping families in need

It’s once again that time of year, when Kiwis across the motu will be visiting Resene stores and donating cans of food in exchange for Resene paint testpots.

Resene’s Hunger for Colour campaign has been making a difference in communities across New Zealand for over a decade. The 11th edition of this annual fundraiser invites Kiwis to exchange cans of food for Resene testpots of paint throughout February.

Two cans of food can be exchanged for a 60mL or 80mL testpot of Resene paint, valued at $6.50. Up to 14 cans of food per person can be exchanged, for a total of seven testpots.

Launching today, the campaign runs until February 28.

Salvation Army Food Security Manager Sonya Cameron highlights the importance of this campaign, particularly at the start of the year.

“January and February are some of the toughest months for families and foodbanks alike. Shelves are often bare after the Christmas season, and demand remains high as families prepare to send children back to school,” she says.

“Knowing we can count on Hunger for Colour each February is a huge relief. It ensures we have the resources to support those in need when they need it most.”

Since its launch in 2014, the Hunger for Colour campaign has resulted in more than 330,000 cans of food donated, $1.65 million worth of paint given away, and countless families supported during times of crisis.

Resene’s Marketing Manager Karen Warman says the campaign resonates deeply with New Zealanders because it blends creativity with compassion.

“Whether you’re redecorating a room, testing a new colour palette, or joining the rock-painting craze, Hunger for Colour lets you help others while having fun. It’s heart-warming to see the generosity of our communities each year.”

In 2024, The Salvation Army provided more than 82,000 food parcels to 36,000 Kiwi households experiencing food insecurity.
