The Salvation Army welcomes Modern Slavery Bill

The Salvation Army welcomes the announcement of a joint Modern Slavery Bill, co-sponsored by Rt Hon Greg Fleming and Rt Hon Camilla Belich. This is a historic moment for Aotearoa New Zealand, marking the first time the Rule of 61 has been used to progress legislation, and it represents real progress in protecting people from exploitation.

While no bill is ever perfect at introduction, this is a strong and robust foundation that will make a meaningful difference for those who are vulnerable to modern slavery, with clear opportunities for further strengthening through the select committee process.

We congratulate all parties, advocates, businesses, unions, faith communities, and community organisations whose persistence and collaboration have helped bring this legislation forward. This milestone shows what sustained collective effort can achieve, and The Salvation Army looks forward to supporting the Bill as it moves through Parliament and toward a future where people, families, and communities can live and work free from exploitation.
