Winter Appeal 2025: Help Bring Warmth and Hope to Kiwi Families in Crisis

As temperatures drop across Aotearoa, thousands of Kiwi families are facing more than just the winter chill. The Salvation Army’s 2025 Winter Appeal is calling on New Zealanders to help bring warmth, dignity and hope to those struggling through the coldest and most challenging months of the year.

For many, winter is a season of hardship. The rising cost of living, unaffordable housing and job insecurity are pushing families to the brink. Heating bills, rent and the cost of food become overwhelming burdens, leaving some with impossible choices—and others with nothing left to give.

“Winter doesn’t just bring frost on the windows,” says Captain Andrew Wilson for The Salvation Army. “It brings isolation, emotional strain and a sense of hopelessness. For families already under pressure, it can feel like the world has gone cold.”

This year’s campaign follows the story of John and his whānau, who are not only battling the cold but also the trauma of their past. Their journey highlights the transformative power of compassion and community.

The Winter Appeal exists to meet this need head-on. With the support of generous Kiwis and supporters like you, The Salvation Army can provide immediate, practical relief—such as food parcels, warm bedding and emergency housing—alongside long-term wraparound care including budgeting advice, counselling and emotional support.

“Through the grace of God and the generosity of our supporters, we’re able to offer more than just material help—we offer hope,” Captain Andrew Wilson adds. “Our wraparound services help thaw the emotional and physical toll of winter and help families rebuild their lives.”

The Salvation Army is urging everyday New Zealanders to join the cause. Every donation—big or small—can help ensure no one is left out in the cold.
