Adequate housing in a community is a critical determinant of health and social outcomes.

Housing can determine educational achievements and opportunities, housing determines health outcomes, and housing determines overall community wellbeing. This report illustrates the reality that many people in Auckland do not have adequate housing and are homeless.

When we think of ‘homelessness’ we may envision people who are street homeless—those who rough sleep. But such people make up only a small proportion of homeless people in Auckland. Many people in Auckland—including families with children—are sleeping outside, sleeping in cars, sleeping in overcrowded situations, and sleeping in uninhabitable houses.
