Social services

We provide assistance with food parcels, furniture, clothing and advocacy, emergency/transitional housing , a Social Worker, low interest and no interest loans, and an after-hours telephone service for emergency welfare support.

Our Drop-In Centre is a safe, clean, warm, non-threatening and relaxing meeting point for the local community. Low-cost counselling is available for a wide range of issues.

Our Senior Services programme supports the elderly by linking them with volunteers who will regularly visit and help connect them to various activities or services. 'Awesome Seniors' is our social group for seniors.

Play Group: 

The First Steps Community Playgroup meets at The Salvation Army Worship & Community Centre, 4 Normanby Street, Newtown on:

  • Tuesday       9.30 am to 11.30 am     
  • Wednesday  9.30 am to 11.30 am
  • Thursday      9.30 am to 11.30 am

Please limit yourself to 2 morning sessions per week.  All parents/caregivers and pre-school children welcome.

Aims

Our Community Playgroup provides an opportunity for pre-school children and their families to grow and develop together within a safe and caring environment; where non-threatening, practical Christian love is experienced.

We aim to provide a range of educational activities to foster children’s learning and development and a chance for parents/caregivers to get to know each other.

Cost:  Free, with a Koha basket available for those who wish to make a donation.

Morning tea: provided for adults and children e.g. fruit, biscuits, tea, coffee, etc
