Our can collection initiative 'Cans for Good' with Watties is back for 2019. The campaign runs for two weeks between Monday 5th and Friday 16th August and registration is open to all schools (from kindergarten to high schools). It’s an easy, fun and educational way that schools can help their local community fill foodbanks this winter.
What is Cans for Good?
Cans for Good is an exciting national education and can collection campaign that runs over two week period from Monday 5th to Friday 16th August 2019 so schools can choose to run the event on the day that works best for their school calendar.
Last year, Cans for Good was a huge success - more than 240 schools took part, collecting more than 95,000 cans to fill Salvation Army foodbanks in the winter period when demand for food parcels is high.
The campaign brings together a charitable can collection drive and creative competition. It's supported by a set of teacher resources designed to engage students in a range of engaging learning experiences. There are resources to suit all ages - including a great budgeting worksheet for secondary schools. The resources are available for schools to download for free after they've registered.
Taking part in Cans for Good can be big or small - some schools simply run a can based mufti day to collect cans, while others go all out with the creative and educational opportunities. Schools choose what works for the. Check out some of the great ways other schools have got involved.
As well as doing good in their communities, having fun and learning, schools can also win some great prizes! Along with a competition for the best can creation, this year a fun, new campaign has been introduced where students can show or tell how they think Wattie’s Spaghetti is made. The judges will pick the most creative entry from each category: Kindergarten, Primary/Intermediate and Secondary School. The overall winner will receive a Wattie’s lunch shout for their school! Check out last year's winners, who each received a $500 Prezzy Card.
The goal for 2019
Since the Wattie's partnership began in 1994, more than 1.4 million cans have been donated and this year through the support of New Zealand schools participating in Cans for Good we hope to achieve our target of 1.5 million cans!
Cans from each school will be given to the local Salvation Army or community foodbanks. These will help refill the shelves during the high winter demand period and enable schools around New Zealand to make a real difference to those in need in their community. To take part, register online by 31st July.
