Newtown Early Childhood Education Centre

Meet the team:

About us:
We are a small, purpose-built, community-based centre in Newtown. Our team are passionate and dedicated Early Childhood teachers. We are focused on building strong, responsive, respectful relationships with tamariki and whānau, and we love being integrated in the Newtown community.
Within our building at the Newtown Salvation Army centre, we are connected to, and part of a community services hub and Salvation Army church. We have services available to offer wrap-around support for families including community playgroup, counselling, food bank, social worker support, a fruit and vege co-op and more!
We have a wonderful centre cook and provide morning tea, a nutritious cooked lunch, and afternoon tea for the children. We have a high ratio of qualified and registered teachers, and enjoy going out on regular excursions into the community such as to local parks, the library, zoo trips and the option of swimming lessons during school terms.
Our education and care programme is based on current Early Childhood research and best practice for learning and development. Our infants, toddlers, and young children are supported to form secure and balanced relationships with their kaiako (teachers). With a strong relational foundation, tamariki (children) are valued for who they are and what they ‘bring’ to our centre and can explore their developing capabilities to learn through play within our environment. We support tamariki to develop a strong sense of self, social and emotional competence, and a passion for learning.
We are a small childcare centre, so spaces are limited – with 8 tamariki aged 0-2 years old each day, and up to 20 tamariki aged 2-6 years old.
Our centre is licensed for 45 children from birth to 6 years, with up to 15 of these tamariki daily being part of our Space Parenting programme.
Opening hours: Monday – Friday, 7:45am to 5:15pm. Our minimum enrolment is for two days per week, and we ask that tamariki are enrolled for a minimum of 7 hours per day. We offer a limited number of half days as well (7:45am-12pm, including lunch, or 12pm-5:15pm, not including lunch).
We run up to four Space parenting groups each week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9am-11:30am during school terms for 12 babies and parents per session. To learn more about these, please read and enquire on the Space Parenting Programmes webpage.
The wider Salvation Army centre where we are in also offers an excellent Community Playgroup for children under 6 years old on Tuesday mornings, 9:30-11:30am during school terms. Please email playgroup.newtown@salvationarmy.org.nz for more information.
